Coastal Sunrise I painted this scene of the old swing-out bridge that crossed the Intracoastal Waterway to Holden Beach around 1985. The scene conjures up memories of my childhood when we paused in our long road trip. The sight of a tugboat clearing the bridge and the salt air breeze coming in through the open windows of our family car was like a shot of adrenaline to a child’s soul, highlighting the excitement of the ocean view just over the bridge. Regretfully, this experience was never shared with my own children. For car air conditioning has done away with that salty breeze, and all up and down the NC coast these old bridges have been replaced by towering four lane bridges. I’m not sure the convenience was worth the loss of anticipation.
